Usage Classification of Bronze: Sculpture Bronze, Architectural Bronze, Commercial Bronze
2025-08-20
In daily life, we often hear classifications such as sculptural bronze, architectural bronze, and commercial bronze, but these are not strict, scientific metallurgical classifications. They are more like functional classifications and industry terms based on usage.
If classified by usage, common types of bronze are as follows:
| CLASSIFICATION | CHEMICAL COMPOSITION | CORE FEATURE REQUIREMENTS | TYPICAL USAGES |
| Sculpture Bronze | Tin Bronze:85-90%Cu + 5-10%Sn + 2-5%Zn + small amount of Pb, such as C90300, C85500 | Excellent casting fluidity (can reproduce the finest details), moderate shrinkage, easy to chemically color (aging) | Artworks, statues, monuments, decorative pieces |
| Architectural Bronze | Actually a high-strength Brass: 55-60%Cu + 37-44%Zn + 2.5%Pb + small amount of Al/Fe, such as C38500, C38000 | High strength and hardness, excellent machinability, wear resistance and weather resistance | Doors, windows, handrails, railings, decorative panels, hardware |
| Commercial Bronze | A specific grade of Brass: UNS C22000,Cu90/Zn10 | Good cold working formability, beautiful color, low cost | Medals, jewelry, radiators, screens, springs |
| Spring Bronze | Phosphor Bronze: Cu + 5% or 8% Sn + small amount of P, such as C51000, C52100 | High elastic limit, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance | Electrical jacks, spring plates, bellows, clutch plates |
| Bearing Bronze | Lead Bronze: Cu + 7%Sn + 7%Pb + small amount of Zn, such as C93200, SAE 660 | Low friction coefficient, wear resistance, can embed foreign matter to prevent scratching the shaft | Sliding bearings, bushings |
Obviously, the names of architectural bronze and commercial bronze are misleading, as it is not bronze (a copper-tin alloy) at all, but brass (a copper-zinc alloy). However, these names have become widely accepted and used in the construction industry.
To avoid misunderstanding, we Shanghai Nosinda Metal Co., Ltd routinely communicate with international clients by specifying the American bronze grade they require, rather than the usage name. In short, the usage determines the performance, and the performance determines the composition.
