Surface Treatment Technology of Aluminum Bus Bar

2025-06-10
Aluminum bus bars are made of aluminum and are used as conductors for efficiently and economically collecting, distributing and transmitting large amounts of current in power systems. Aluminum bus bars are highly conductive, lightweight, cost-effective, corrosion-resistant, easy to process and have good heat dissipation. If you have any need or questions, please contact Shanghai Nosinda Metal Co., Ltd. and we will immediately reply to you and ensure that each customer makes the right choice in metal and manufacturing.  Aluminum Bus Bar
It is very important to have proper surface treatment on the aluminum bus bar before use.
► Improve Corrosion Resistance: prevent the aluminum bar from corrossion caused by the environment (moisture, salt spray, chemical gas, etc.).
► Improve Electrical Contact Performance: reduce contact resistance and ensure reliable and low heat generation at the connection point.
► Enhance Wear Resistance: protect the surface from mechanical damage during installation, operation or maintenance.
► Improve Weldability (if welding is required): prepare for subsequent welding processes.

There are three common surface treatment technologies, electroplating, chemical plating and anodizing.

1. Electroplating

Tin plated aluminum bus bar

Tin plating: Tin plated aluminum bus bar can provide good solderability, excellent corrosion resistance and low contact resistance. Tin is soft and has a low melting point. It is a common and cost-effective coating for the contact surface of aluminum bus bars.

Silver Plated Aluminum Bus Bar

➤ Silver plating: Galvanic Silver plated aluminum bus bar has the best electrical and thermal conductivity among all metals, and its contact resistance is extremely low and stable. It has good corrosion resistance and high cost. It is used in key connection parts that require extremely high contact resistance, large current, or long-term high reliability.

Copper Plated Bus Bar

➤ Copper plating: It significantly improves connection performance (reduces contact resistance, solves aluminum oxidation problems, improves connection reliability) and a certain degree of corrosion resistance. These advantages make it very valuable in situations where high-reliability connections or direct connections to copper devices are required.

Nickel Plated Aluminum Bus Bar

Nickel plating: high hardness, good wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Its conductivity is not as good as copper, silver and tin, usually used as an intermediate barrier layer (to prevent galvanic corrosion caused by direct contact between aluminum and other metals such as copper), or as a functional plating layer (if wear resistance is required). It is rarely used alone for busbar connection surfaces that require low contact resistance.

2. Chemical Plating
➤Chemical nickel plating: can obtain uniform coating on complex shapes. The performance is similar to electroplated nickel, but the phosphorus content affects the conductivity.

3. Anodizing
• Principle: to form a dense, hard, porous aluminum oxide film on surface through electrochemical reaction.
• Features: the oxide film can be tens or even hundreds of microns thick, with high hardness, good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and good insulation.
• Application: mainly used in the non-connected area of aluminum bus bars, providing excellent protection and decoration.
